uses of banana leaves

Many types of local cakes are wrapped in banana leaves. Some are wrapped before they are cooked and some are wrapped after they are cooked. The lepat pisang, lepat pulut, lopis, pulut panggang and kuih bakul are wrapped and cooked in banana leaves. The nasi lemak tastes better and has nicer aroma when wrapped in banana leaves. Lemang is also cooked inside a length of bamboo lined with banana leaves.

Long ago, when there were no umbrellas or raincoats, people used banana leaves to protect themselves from the rain. Today, you can sometimes see the Orang Asli and villagers using banana leaves on rainy days.

Banana leaves are easily available because the plants are found everywhere in the countryside. They grow very well in our climate. The leaves are cut and washed before they are used to wrap the food.

To some people, eating from a banana leaves gives the food a better flavour compared to eating from plates. To experience this feeling, you can go to go any Indian restaurants and treat yourself to a meal of rice and curry served on a piece of banana leaves.
